Program Prerequisites and Course Credit Information

  • Law Enforcement and Public Safety, Forestry, Culinary Arts, TV Broadcast Productions, and Ed Prep
  • Maximum of 15 students per class period in respective programs to ensure a safe environment for students in the classroom and in shop experiences (per MDE Recommendation)
  • Academic Review: Students must have passed core subjects (English, science, math, and history) the previous year
  • Discipline Review: Students may not have discipline incident on record of any violent or volatile behavior. (Director’s discretion)
  • Attendance Review: Excessive absences may impact student eligibility (Director’s discretion)

Health Sciences

  • Maximum of 15 in class if only offered once per day (e.g., during 2nd block); maximum of 15 in class if offered twice per day (1st and 3rd blocks) due to the need for instructor supervision of clinical experiences (MDE and RUSH Health Systems require 10/1 ratio of students to instructors. In order to attend clinical in a large class, the counselor or other designated personnel may have to assist.)
  • Science Prerequisite: Students must have completed Biology I with a C or higher prior to taking Health Science Core I.
  • Academic Review: Students must have an average of C in all classes the year prior to taking the course. (RUSH Health Systems Affiliation Agreement requires a 75 average to be eligible to participate in clinical.)
  • Discipline Review: Students will be placed in clinical experiences in local healthcare facilities and must meet the qualifications of the RUSH Health Systems Affiliation Agreement with CCCTC; therefore, a student may not have had more than three in-school suspensions and no out-of-school suspensions the previous year. (Director’s discretion)
  • Attendance Review: Excessive absences may impact student eligibility (Director’s discretion)

Carnegie Credits and Graduation Requirements

  • Students may receive one Carnegie unit per semester for career and technical courses.
  • Elective credit (up to four units) may be awarded for Law Enforcement and Public Safety, TV Broadcasting, and Culinary Arts.
  • Up to two units of Science (other than Biology I) and two elective units may be awarded for Forestry.
  • Up to two units of Science (other than Biology I) and ½ unit of Contemporary Health, and elective units may be awarded for Health Science (up to total of four units).

Weighted Courses

  • Health Science courses will receive +.5 weight in the QHS Quality Points Average.
  • Ed Prep courses will receive a +.5 in the QHS Quality Points Average.
