Health Science Core (year 1) and Healthcare & Clinical Services (year 2) are a pathway of courses for students in health sciences. The pathways include classroom and hands-on experiences that will provide students with an overview of the health care field. The pathways will also begin to prepare students for careers in health related occupations.
Both programs include a minimum of 100 hours of clinical-type experiences to be obtained by the programs’ completion. These clinical-type experiences may include: tours of health care facilities, guest speakers, participation in community services, laboratory practice, demonstrations in the classroom, and job shadowing at medical facilities.
Health Science Core (yr 1) introduces students to the theory and practical applications of tasks related to employment in the field of health science. Students will cover topics such as safety, infection control, health care systems, vital organs of the human body & health maintenance practices. Students will explore careers in health care as well as the educational requirements, the professional, legal and ethical responsibilities involved.
Healthcare & Clinical Services (yr 2) helps students establish insight into health care careers. This course covers topics such as human growth and development, information technology, therapeutic services and rehabilitative services. Other topics include medical services, emergency services, mental health, pharmacological services and nursing services. Students may also obtain a two-year CPR certification at the healthcare provider level.
Students completing both courses earn a total of two science credits toward their graduation requirements. Health Science is considered an advanced course by Quitman High School, and students completing the courses receive 1.0 weight in their Quality Point Averages.
STUDENT ORGANIZATION: HOSA
HOSA is a National student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA’s goal is to encourage all health science instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA Partnership.
HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for middle school, secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in health science education and biomedical science programs or have interests in pursuing careers in health professions. HOSA is 100% health care!
Since its inception in 1976, HOSA has grown steadily reaching over 245,000 members through 54 states, territories, and country associations in 2018-2019. Mississippi HOSA has received recognition for having increased in membership for the past 4 years and currently has over 4,100 members and over 100 chapters.

Mission
The mission of HOSA is to empower HOSA-Future Health Professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience.
Purpose
The purpose of HOSA-Future Health Professionals is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program.
Goals
The goals that HOSA believes are vital to each member are:
